Jon Krakauer was born in 1954, in Massachusetts and shortly moved to Oregon and grew up there. While other boys idolized American Astronauts, Jon was inspired by fellow Oregonian, Willi Unsoeld. Willi was a family friend who sparked young Jon's interest in mountain climbing. He devoted his early adulthood to mountain climbing. Krakauer lived precariously, trying out jobs in various trades like carpentry and commercial fishing. Jon began writing magazines in 1974, when the American Alpine Club asked him to write an article on a peak in Alaska. He made a greater transition to major magazines such as Smithsonian and Architectural Digest. Krakauer says some of his best work was submitted to Outside magazine. His love of wilderness and nature shows through in his pieces and work and novels. Jon Krakauer attempted to climb Mt. Everest, but failed. He turned his journey into a full-length book.
He wrote Into The Wild, to tell the story of Christopher McCandless. Jon Krakauer is still writing and continues to keep his love for nature and wilderness alive.
