Final Assessment.

For the Into The Wild final assessment, I wrote a poem from Chris McCandless' point of view. My poem tells what he was thinking when he was about to take his first steps down the Stampede Trail and into the wild. Here is my poem: Enojy!

Walking With Wild

I now walk into the wild,

Leaving the life I once had behind.

Ten pounds of rice, and an open state of mine.

I know walk into the wild,

To find my inner self.

I have eradicated society, and burned all my wealth.

I want to find a purpose, I want to find a reason.

A reason to live, a person who I can believe in.

I now walk into the wild, the wild that is not tame.

I’m going to live off the land, and if I die,

I’m the one to blame.

Nobody is around, it’s just me, myself, and I.

Braving the Alaskan wilderness,

Now THIS is my high.

I may be ill-prepared, but when I looked at the Trail,

I just smiled.

I’m Alexander Supertramp, and I now walk into the wild.

"Woah, intro!"

Into The Wild is based on a true story about a top student and athlete named Christopher McCandless who graduated from Emory University, in Atlanta. It is written by author Jon Krakauer. In the novel, Christopher abandons his family, gives his life savings of $24,000 to charity, and hitchikes to Alaska to live in the wilderness. The books starts with the finding of his body in an abandoned bus, and retraces his steps during the two years that he was missing. McCandless survived for about 112 days in the Alaskan wilderness. He ate roots, berries, small game, and he also kept a journal. The novel travels along with McCandless, and his ultimate journey to death.

Jon Krakauer Biography.

Jon Krakauer was born in 1954, in Massachusetts and shortly moved to Oregon and grew up there. While other boys idolized American Astronauts, Jon was inspired by fellow Oregonian, Willi Unsoeld. Willi was a family friend who sparked young Jon's interest in mountain climbing. He devoted his early adulthood to mountain climbing. Krakauer lived precariously, trying out jobs in various trades like carpentry and commercial fishing. Jon began writing magazines in 1974, when the American Alpine Club asked him to write an article on a peak in Alaska. He made a greater transition to major magazines such as Smithsonian and Architectural Digest. Krakauer says some of his best work was submitted to Outside magazine. His love of wilderness and nature shows through in his pieces and work and novels. Jon Krakauer attempted to climb Mt. Everest, but failed. He turned his journey into a full-length book.
He wrote Into The Wild, to tell the story of Christopher McCandless. Jon Krakauer is still writing and continues to keep his love for nature and wilderness alive.

Aloha, Hawaii!

A place in the United States where i truly desire to go is Hawaii. As a young girl i dreamed of paradise, danced around in a green hula skirt, and loved the movie Blue Crush. I enjoyed saying "Aloha" which is Hawaiian for love. I would not want to visit Hawaii, i would want to live there. Hawaii is in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. How would I get there? Well, it would take a very long plane ride lasting about 13 hours. Honolulu, Hawaii is 4850 miles away from Baltimore, Maryland. I believe it is well worth the trip.
Hawaii is a beautiful island nation that became a U.S. state on August 21, 1959. It is made of eight main islands; Niihau, Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Lanai, Kahoolawe, Maui, and Hawaii. The people on every single island are so diverse. I would want to visit all of the islands to get the entire affect of Hawaiian culture and exprience. Hawaii is dominately known for its active volcanoes. Mauna Loa is the most active volcano in the world and its located in Hawaii. The other things that this island nation is known for are its exotic flowers, beaches with palm trees, breathtaking cliffs and canyons, and waterfalls.
The climate is tropical meaning the temperature is mainly in the 80's all year around. Therefore, I will only be taking with me flips-flops, sun dresses, shorts, tank tops, and a pair of sunglasses. I'm not to interested in the mountains or canyons, I will be spending my time at the beach. So I can't forget a bathing suit and surf board. I plan to catch some gnarly waves in the crystal clear waters. I also hope to attend a luau and learn how to hula dance. I plan to eat the most delicious pineapple i can. My expectations for this trip are high. I think Hawaii is ready to give me the exprience of a lifetime.

Character Chart.

Character
Chris McCandless

Direct Characterization: in literature and drama, the method of character development in which the author simply tells what the character is like.

Direct Characterization
- Eighteen
- friendly
- 5ft 7in
- Wiry build
- Congenial
- well educated
- dark eyes
- emotive
- horsy teeth
Indirect Characterization: shows things that reveal the personality of a character.

Indirect Characterization
- Hitchhiker
- carries a weapon
- claims to be something he is obviously not ("Alex?" Gallien responded, fishing for a last name. "Just Alex," the young man replied, pointedly rejecting the bait." pg 4)
- Unprepared
- Eager ("He was determined. Real gung ho. The word that comes to mind is excited. He couldn't wait to get out there and get started" pg 6)
- Asks meaningful questions
- Poser (alias Alex)
- Hardworking
- Moral is high, has to complete what he starts
- Vulnerable ("...-and conveyed a vulnerability that made Westerberg want to take the kid under his wing." pg 16)
- Sensitive good looks
- Wore glasses
- Looked emaciated
I am getting the impression that Chris McCandless is secretive and he doesn't want anyone to know about what he is about to do. Chris McCandless seems almost bipolar towards certain people. I believe that Chris gave up on his normal life, and wanted to reinvent himself. Chris has his own belief system and couldn't care less about what anyone else has to say. McCandless does what he wants and will not let anymore stop him until he reaches his goal. I dont know what his ultimate goal is yet.

My Symbolic Belt.

If I were to create a belt with eight symbols that symbolized my journey thus fur and my personality, I would begin with a symbol from my baby years. Since all babies look the same, I was commonly mistaken as a boy because my name was Jordan. In fact, my sex on my birth certificate was origianlly marked "male". It took my mother three months to change it back to "female". Because of this I would put blue baby shoes on my belt.
Next, as a toddler I loved to play with dolls and stuffed animals. I would like to include a teddy bear on my symbolic belt. I still sleep with the same teddy bear that i recieved when i was only three years old. Music keeps me going, so I would put some music notes on my belt. I love sports. I love playing them, watching them, attending sporting events, and talking about sports. I would put a lacrosse stick on my belt because that is my favortie sport. I would include a smiley face on my belt, because that is what best describes my personality. I'm always smiling and laughing. I would have to include the initials, KCJD, which are the first letter me and my best friends names. I would be nothing without my best friends. They shaped me into the person I am today. I'd have to draw an elephant on my belt because elephants are my favortie animal. This goes along with one of my favorite philosophies; if there is an elephant in the room, introduce it. The last symbol I would put on my belt would be the symbol of a heart because having a big heart and being able to love is important to me. I have tiny hands, but a big heart so I think putting a heart on my belt is the perfect ending symbol.

Chris McCandless' Journey Reflection.

Chris McCandless covered a lot of ground in just a couple of years. He traveled through completely different terrain in every journey he made. The longest journey seemed like the trip from Carthage to Alaska. I realized that Chris didn’t have a plan in the beginning but it was clear as what he was going to do after he canoed down to El Golfo de Santa Clara. He was going to completely obliterate normal society from his life and lead a life according to Jack London. It was apparent to me that Chris thought he could handle himself in any given situation. The Alaskan topography was above and beyond his survival skills. Chris McCandless met his demise. He died doing what he loved most and that it all that mattered.
